The Truth of Who You Are
The Book of Genesis tells us a beautiful story of our creation; it shows God’s own nature: He is a lover and a creator, He in his infinite mercy and love wanted you to exist because it is true that the story of humanity would be incomplete without you. The Book of Genesis also introduces us to who we are: loved daughters and sons of a Father who willed us into existence and who loved and chose us since the beginning of time. A Father who created us in his image and likeness, a Father who, when He saw us, found us very good (Gen 1, 31).
“Then God said: Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the tame animals, all the wild animals, and all the creatures that crawl on the earth.
God created mankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” -Genesis 1, 26-27
It is also in Genesis where we find the story of Adam and Eve and original sin. It is because of original sin that suffering, death, and sin came into humanity. “As a result of original sin, human nature is weakened in its powers, subject to ignorance, suffering and the domination of death, and inclined to sin (this inclination is called "concupiscence").” (Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC], 1997, para. 418).
As a result, one of our main battles is knowing, embracing, and receiving who and whose we are. We can live our lives not knowing who we are and believing the lies that the world, the devil, and even ourselves tell us. Our story and wounds can even become one of the main sources used by the devil to rob us of the opportunity of receiving the gift we truly are and twist our identity. As Christopher West says “the devil does not have its own clay”, so it needs to disfigure the everlasting truth of our identity to take us away from the love of God.
That is why, in this section, we will go over the lies we have come to believe about ourselves at some point in our lives, but most importantly, we will cover the truth of who we truly are. When reading these lies and truths, I pray that you have an open heart to receive what the Lord wants to reveal to you.
God has conquered death, He created you, He knows you, He wills you, He desires you. He is here with you, walking this journey with you. Let’s begin!
